Tips for their Teeth: Brushing with kids

With candy and sweets seemingly in endless supply these days, the battle for the health of our children is at an all-time high. This is especially true when it comes their first line of defense, teeth. With that in mind, here are some tips to take care of your child’s teeth.

It’s better with electricity
Invest in an electric toothbrush for your kids (and really, for the whole family). These are overwhelming recommended by dentists, because they simply work much better than a “normal” toothbrush. A 2003 Cochrane Oral Health Group study concluded that an electric toothbrush with rotating action resulted in less plaque and fewer bouts of gingivitis, compared to a hand powered toothbrush. An added benefit is that for children, it’s frankly a bit more fun!

Keep in mind that there is a difference between a battery-powered toothbrush and an electric toothbrush. A battery powered toothbrush is essentially a manual toothbrush that vibrates a bit, though at a price tag significantly lower that an electric one ($30 vs $90).

How to Prepare Your Family and Yard for a Pool

A new pool can help your family stay active and provide hours of entertainment during the warmer months of the year. There are some basic things that you should do before your pool is installed. Preparing your family and property for a new pool is a simple solution to ensuring you are ready for the installation well in advance.

Setting Rules for Safety

If you have young children, it is important to set some basic ground rules before the pool is installed. For instance, you may want to be sure that your kids understand they aren't allowed to enter the pool area without adult supervision for safety reasons. You should also explain that the pool gate should be kept closed unless you have given permission for entrance to the pool area. Setting and enforcing rules ensures your older children are aware of the dangers of swimming alone. Younger kids will need to be supervised carefully and the proper safety fencing will need to be installed before the pool is filled with water for the first time.

Some things to teach kids to avoid include riding bikes or trikes around the pool, diving into an above ground pool where the water isn't deep enough and using any electronics or electrical devices around the pool area. Installing the proper fencing is important. You may need to wait until the pool has been installed, but not yet filled with water, to ensure you have the right size fencing to surround the pool. A gate that automatically locks can be vital to protecting small children and toddlers who may not understand or remember the pool safety rules.

Why Every Shift Worker Needs Blockout Blinds

Most shift workers have experienced the dreaded wake-up after three or four hours of sleep because the sun was shining in their window. Not getting enough sleep is a huge issues, especially for people who work the graveyard shift and need to get as much sleep as possible during the day. Installing block out blinds on your window is a great way to make sure your room stays dark, and you are able to get the rest your body needs. They are also great for lowering your energy bills because the blinds minimize the transfer of air from the outside to the inside of your home.

Block Out Light

Most brands of block out blinds are great at blocking out light any time of day, and some types can block 99 per cent of the light that can potentially enter the bedroom while you are trying to sleep. Blocking out as much light as possible allows shift workers to sleep deeply, reducing health problems that are caused by lack of deep sleep. Keeping the bedroom dark is especially important for people who live in Alaska and other areas of the north where the sun shines about 20 hours per day during certain parts of the year.

Block Out Sound

Another huge benefit of block out blinds is that they block out more sound than traditional blinds, making it easier for shift workers to sleep while most of the people in the world are out and about. Planting bushes outside the window and using a white-noise machine are other ways that shift workers can minimize the amount of noise they hear while they are trying to sleep. Workers who live in very noisy environments may want to use both blockout blinds and heavy curtains to block out as much light and sound as possible. They may also need to wear earplugs to block out sounds.

Seeking Help In Family Law

The family which is considered bound by blood may even at some point encounter crisis that are deemed necessary to be brought to the court for proper and just resolution. Areas of these mentioned issues usually revolve around parenting, child support and custody. It is usually difficult to look for a lawyer whom you will entrust this very sensitive situation with and be comfortable in discussing the details. Moreover, we have learned the harsh realities of separation which includes child custody, disagreements and the accompanying emotional stress thus professional help to assist in minimizing the impact is greatly needed.

Seeking help in family law is a common resort for every family whenever the need arises. A custody lawyer montreal based Atty. Joan Benson who is a member of the Quebec Bar with 30 years of experience offers professional services on these concerns. Her field of expertise includes child support, child custody, property and international abduction of children.

A divorce lawyer montreal based practitioner as well, she extends assistance if you are contemplating on getting a divorce. This is expected to be a tedious process and may also impact the children, the shared property, finances, family and friends. It is a complicated procedure in getting a separation thus a lawyer who is experienced and objective to represent you is highly recommended. She can also walk you through on the process of the proceedings and the papers to be completed and filed.

Our First Bigby's Trivia Night Experience

One of the things I love the most about being an official member of Davao Bloggers is the opportunity to meet fellow bloggers during events and the chance to bond with them like true friends. Joining the events and activities organized by the officers and active members is actually the only reason I have to go out of the house or should I say the only social life I have especially when I become a stay at home mom. I used to participate in events frequently but slowed down when Bella’s babysitter left so in order for me to join the blogging events I need to tag along my little girl which is fun and challenging at the same time.

Aside from the invites that the group receives from the city’s establishments, Bigby’s Trivia Night is one of the most anticipated weekly events by DB members. This is where bloggers meet and bond as they compete with other participants. I have been meaning to join the Trivia Night ever since, but since Abreeza Mall is far from our place and bringing Bella to the event is really challenging for me so I just let the idea pass and wait for the perfect time for me to attend.

When hubby went home from work earlier two Wednesdays ago, I tried to ask him if he can go with me to the Trivia Night. And guess what? He agreed but with condition that we should come home right after the event so we can rest early. The quiz has already started when we arrived at Bigby's and there were lots of DB members present at that time. The table assigned for the team is fully seated so we just shared table with Mommy Crislyn and Daddy Ace.

Tips In Buying A New House

Most of us aspire to own a house. It is a representation of independence and financial stability. Home ownership means we can make upgrades, modify the landscape and put decorations according to our preference. We don’t want to rent an apartment and shell out the monthly fees for the rest of our lives thus we work hard and save money to purchase our dream house.

The process of choosing and buying our dream house is complicated and challenging. Various things have to be pondered before making a decision. Determine your budget and calculate your personal finances first. Make sure that you can afford the down payment and the mortgage. Create a list of the stuffs that you need and want in a house. Consider the location as well as the immediate area; your workplace, schools, public transportation, parks and hospitals should be easily accessible. Don’t hesitate to ask suggestions from your friends who have already experienced purchasing a house. Hire a home inspector that will scrutinize every nook and cranny of your future home. They can provide you a report  and give feedback that will help you decide whether you will buy it or not. They can also give helpful tips that is important for new house buyers.

Keep Your Home and Family Safe from Flood

The rain has been pouring for days now and we can’t help but worry about the safety of our loved ones and our property as well. Our home is located near the riverbanks and the place is usually flooded several times in a year wherein the worst almost reached the ceiling last 2009. We are not yet residents of the subdivision that time. Despite the threats of flooding in the place, we still decided to occupy the house which we acquired from Social Security System.

We are well - informed that the house and the subdivision is located in a flood – prone area but we have no choice but to still go with the purchase because of its very strategic location and also with the size of the lot area which is bigger than the usual lot sizes offered in the newly – developed subdivisions in the city. For the last four years that we are here, we have experienced flood several times already and the worst so far was what happened two days ago. We are just thankful that the water did not reach the main house although our garage and my parent’s store were a little affected but there was no damage in our home and family. Thank you, Lord!

Keeping every home and family safe from flood or any natural calamity is very challenging not to mention very dangerous because we do not know when it will hit us. To ensure safety, it is important to be prepared all the time – before, during and after the flood. In our case, we are very vigilant especially when it is raining because the possibility of getting flooded is high so we practically do not sleep at night when it’s raining. Important documents are in one place so we could keep them easily during the flood. We also prepare several bags full of clothes and other important stuff like food, milk, diapers, medicines, etc.

His 41st Birthday Celebration

The Lord has been so good to our family especially to the life of Bren because despite the trials and challenges that came our way, we were able to hold a humble dinner at home to celebrate his 41st birthday. There was no plan of celebrating at first because until the day of his big day, Kuya Macky is still in the hospital. Aside from the financial consideration on Macky's hospital bills, I don't think there would be enough time for us to prepare even for a simplest dinner at home.

On the day of Bren's birthday, good news came in the morning when Macky's platelet count rose up to almost normal level and his doctor advised that he can be discharged anytime that day. When I arrived in the hospital to take care of the bills, Mama went home earlier in the afternoon to prepare for Bren's birthday dinner. We are expecting a few people from work and Bren was so excited for his cousin and best friend's presence who is in the city to attend the 3-day Philippine Councilors League (PCL) National Convention.

Bren is obviously very happy having Cousin Seth on his big day.
It was Seth's last night in Davao and we are so glad that he actually made an effort to visit us on Bren's 41st birthday celebration. The last time that we saw each other was last 2011 during our vacation in Maasin, Iloilo and we are so delighted to see him after almost two years.

Photo taken from iPhone 4s - Bella with Tatay Bren and Daddy Seth ;)
I am so amazed by Bren and Seth's friendship. They are not just cousins and best friends, they treated each other more than brothers and the love and respect that they have are beyond words. I can really feel it  every single time that they are together.  I am almost teary-eyed when Seth and Bren embraced each other tightly as we said goodbye to Seth that night.

4 Ways to Tell It's Time to Buy a New Fridge-Freezer

Is it time to bid farewell to that old fridge-freezer? Just because your fridge still works doesn't mean you can't benefit from a new one.

If you're dealing with any of these four problems, it's time to start looking for a new one:

1. You're Spending Too Much On Your Utility Bills

Older refrigerators can do a number on your energy bills. And, the older your fridge-freezer gets, the weaker its insulation is going to get -- meaning it will have to work even harder to keep everything cold.

The only way to lower your bills is to take advantage of new technology. For example, some fridges use less than 450 kWh per year. On top of that, they come with electronic settings -- instead of the traditional dials -- so that you can make more precise temperature changes.

2. Your Keep Chiseling Away At Ice Build-Ups

If you're finding ice anywhere but in your ice maker, that's a bad sign. Specifically, it's proof that your fridge-freezer has sprung a leak somewhere. As a result, water is dripping out and freezing up.

Instead of trying to fix it yourself -- or paying someone to fix it for you -- it can be a whole lot easier and a whole lot more cost-effective to just start over with a new appliance.

3. You Are Struggling To Shut It

When refrigerators become harder to close, it usually means that something has gone wrong with the seals on their doors. And when your fridge-freezer isn't sealing properly, it's going to have a much harder time keeping everything inside cool and fresh.

Music Jamming With Louie

Last September 2012, our family had the opportunity to accommodate one of my closest friends and her family in our humble home. Ma’am Joy, her husband Louie and their cute little girl came home to Digos to visit their family. They have to catch their flight to Palawan the next day that is why they decided to stay with us in Davao City for a little catching up and bonding moment.

It was Bren and Louie’s first meeting. I am glad that they easily get comfortable with each other for they have something in common – their love for music. Louie plays guitar remarkably and so does Bren. Since we have an extra guitar at home (a friend left it to Bren for safekeeping) Bren invited Louie to have a music jamming session. And of course, the session will not be as enjoyable without a few shots of their favorite rhum. You know, men.... :( :(

And the jamming session became more fun and lively as they sing the night away with the rest of us joining them.  It was such a fun night with Louie and Ma'am Joy. Bong (Joy's younger brother) was also there to join us for dinner. He brought with him few pieces of Durian which we happily shared with each other. Hehehe

I hope we can get to do another bonding time in the next days to come. Wishing and praying that it is going to be in Palawan with my whole family too.
