Low Cost Portable Air Conditioners – A Pefect Solution for the UK Summer

We all know how unpredictable UK summers can be; hot and humid one minute, cold and rainy the next. One week an air conditioned work environment seems like the most desirable place to be, the next week the heating needs to be back on. An answer may be at hand. Rather than making the risky decision to install a high-cost, air conditioning system that may not be used in a cool summer, why not consider a lower cost, portable air conditioner?

Portable air conditioners are a great option for the typical UK summer, they are easy to store away in the cooler months or move to different areas depending on where they are needed most. Besides improving working conditions for office workers, it is also important to consider industrial spaces that must be kept cool for safety reasons; storage facilities or processing plants that handle volatile chemicals or gases, and computer rooms for example. And air conditioners are no longer just for larger offices and industrial spaces, the lower cost, portable air conditioners are a much more viable option for smaller businesses and homes too.

Toshiba Air ConditionerThe Toshiba KYR-25COXC1, also known as the ‘Mighty Cool’, is one such machine. Its powerful Toshiba compressor that is usually found on fully fitted versions means it will last longer than other air conditioners at this price point, not to mention performing at a highly efficient rate for such a compact machine. It has a sturdily built outer body attached to an internal steel frame, cutting down on annoying rattles and vibrations when the machine is running. When it comes to emptying the machine, the Toshiba is very low maintenance because it has an inbuilt condensate pump and extra-long 1.7M hose with an easy-to-fit window kit, so there is no water tank to empty. A digital display and soft-touch electronic controls make this a user-friendly option too.

Sahara’s Slimline SPCI53-06MI is the first portable air conditioner to use inverter technology, which is usually reserved for fully fitted air conditioning systems. Inverter air conditioners use less energy than other models, are quieter and create less fluctuation in room temperature. Standard air conditioners switch between being on stand by or going at full speed to keep the air in a room at the desired temperature. Inverter conditioners use a constant stream of air to maintain an even temperature all day. As with the Toshiba, the Sahara also has an inbuilt condensate pump, hose and easy-to-install window kit, removing the need to empty a water tank. The Sahara Slimline has a 24hour timer, allowing it to be set to cool the home or workspace ready for a certain time, a remote control and full colour LED display.

When choosing an air conditioner, there are a few things to consider:
  • How easy it is to install? The Toshiba Mighty Cool and the Sahara Slimline both have a 13a plug and, once the hose section has been installed using the window kit, it is simply plugged in and switched on.
  • Is it powerful enough for the space that needs to be cooled?  The power of an air conditioner is usually measured in BTUs (British Thermal Unit). There are calculators online to help work out how many BTUs are required for a certain amount of space in metre cubed. However as all spaces have different requirements it always pays to ask an expert.
  • How reliable is it? This will depend on the quality of the compressor in the unit. Again, an expert should be able to explain the differences between units.
  • What are the noise levels like? There are many cheap air conditioners available, which tend to be very noisy and inefficient. This does not necessarily mean that a very expensive conditioner will be any better. Visiting a showroom to see the air conditioners in action is a good idea.
  • What about spares, servicing and warranty? Don’t forget to find out about the availability and fitting of spare parts. Check how long the warranty is and what spares or servicing is available when it runs out.
For help to answer all these questions and any others that may crop up when purchasing an air conditioner, it is advisable to seek the help of a specialist retailer of air quality products. Specialists will have the experience and industry knowledge to understand exactly which air conditioner will best fit the needs of the customer. These low cost, portable air conditioners provide a degree of flexibility and convenience that's both afforadable and perfect for the on/off nature of the British Summer.
