Keep Your Home and Family Safe from Flood

The rain has been pouring for days now and we can’t help but worry about the safety of our loved ones and our property as well. Our home is located near the riverbanks and the place is usually flooded several times in a year wherein the worst almost reached the ceiling last 2009. We are not yet residents of the subdivision that time. Despite the threats of flooding in the place, we still decided to occupy the house which we acquired from Social Security System.

We are well - informed that the house and the subdivision is located in a flood – prone area but we have no choice but to still go with the purchase because of its very strategic location and also with the size of the lot area which is bigger than the usual lot sizes offered in the newly – developed subdivisions in the city. For the last four years that we are here, we have experienced flood several times already and the worst so far was what happened two days ago. We are just thankful that the water did not reach the main house although our garage and my parent’s store were a little affected but there was no damage in our home and family. Thank you, Lord!

Keeping every home and family safe from flood or any natural calamity is very challenging not to mention very dangerous because we do not know when it will hit us. To ensure safety, it is important to be prepared all the time – before, during and after the flood. In our case, we are very vigilant especially when it is raining because the possibility of getting flooded is high so we practically do not sleep at night when it’s raining. Important documents are in one place so we could keep them easily during the flood. We also prepare several bags full of clothes and other important stuff like food, milk, diapers, medicines, etc.

We are also blessed to have a generous neighbor who willingly offered the upper part of their house when there is a need for us to evacuate to a higher place. The vehicles were parked in a safer place which is usually outside the subdivision. During flooding, electrical switches are also turned off for obvious reasons. And another important thing is to be updated with the news – I often get my updates from Twitter and Facebook.

Nobody wants to be affected by the flood but if there is one good thing that this kind of experience has brought us, it is the spirit of cooperation among the community. And if you will ask about the hardest part – it is the organizing and putting back everything in place and the resources needed to replace the affected home furniture and appliances. But above all things, the most essential is to keep every family member safe and sound.

I hear you! I wonder if we are neighbors. The Ondoy flooding was especially traumatic for our family. We are currently having our second floor built before the rainy days come. But looks like rainy days have come way ahead of summer. :(

Be safe sis. I've been seeing Davao lately in the news and sadly, not in a good way. It's scary now that it's becoming flooded quickly. has it always been like that when it rains? Or only recently because of this "kaingin" thing?

Take care and maybe, if you have the means to do so, elevate your house so you're not susceptible to flooding.

Ate Rovs, I did not know that it was this bad. Hope you're alright now. Nobody really wants flood but we cannot really control the acts of nature. We can only be vigilant. Good thing that you're all prepared for the flood.

Oh, I didn't know that your place was affected Sis! I just heard that Davao City was the center of typhoon. Glad that you and family are safe. I was wondering why it's almost summer and Philippines is still experiencing heavy rains and flood.

Hope it will not happen again.
